On November 1, lots of folks from Tobermory and the near environs gathered at Tobermory United for the annual craft day hosted by Northern Twisted Roots. This is always a joyous and fun time with lots of conversation and laughter – and even some painting, gluing and creativity achieved! Northern Twisted Roots, and the unique items they create from rustic household wares, is a major part of the St. Nicholas Bazaar. You won’t be able to miss their gigantic display as you enter the Tobermory Community Centre on Nov. 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. So many people are in the thick of preparations for this event – cooking soup, baking, creating crafts, preparing items for the silent auction, etc. There will also be more than twenty tables of outside vendors! The St. Nicholas Bazaar is a major fundraiser for Tobermory United Church. It’s also a joyous entry into the holiday season.

Tobermory United will be offering a further study of a book that challenges and engages: Season’s Greetings: Christmas Letters from Those Who Were There, by Ruth L. Boling. The study will start Dec. 4 at 1:00 p.m. and will be offered in a hybrid option – in person or on Zoom. Copies of the book are available through independent bookstores and from online sources. For more information, call the church at 519-596-2394 or e-mail tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca.

Over the past three years, “Christmas with Peninsula Musicians and Friends” has become a beloved Tobermory tradition! This year’s version will be held Dec. 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Tobermory United and will feature a wide variety of musical offerings – the heartfelt tunes of Brian Taylor and Bluesky Day; Violist Dominik Franken and friends; Janet Whittington and Robert Franklin; Beige Macintosh; Rod Layman; the Tobermory United Church choir, and more! All are welcome to join with friends and neighbours and experience the special music of this season. Donations collected at the event will support the future building plans at the Golden Dawn.

On Dec. 19, Tobermory United offers a Longest Night service at 7:00 p.m. Held just before the Solstice, this is a special service of candlelight, quiet and calm, a time to stop in a busy season, with the aim of offering comfort and solace, especially for those who are weary or grieving (and aren’t we all?).

Christmas eve will be celebrated at Tobermory United at 5:00 p.m., with a service for all ages that will tell the Christmas story and end with a candlelight rendition of “Silent Night.” As always, all are welcome.
