Over 600 Dinners Served at Tobermory United’s Summer Chicken Barbecue

Tobermory United Church’s 53rd annual Summer Chicken BBQ occurred August 2, and through a marvel of planning, organization and hard work, almost 600 chicken dinners were sold, 124 of which were delivered to Lion’s Head. Tobermory United is humbled, once again, by the community’s support of this event, which is a major fundraiser for our work. To the volunteers, the bakers, those who purchased tickets, Peacock’s Foodland, Peninsula Parcel and the Hungry Hiker, we can never thank you enough.

Summer in the Spirit, a joint program between Tobermory United and St. Edmund’s Anglican, with the aims of “building community, honouring the sacredness of place and celebrating Spirit,” had an excellent evening on July 30 with Tobermory residents Yehia and Haidy Ahmed on “Understanding Islam.” Yehia and Haidy returned in June from completing the Hajj, the pilgrimage in Mecca that Muslims are required to undertake if they are able, and more than 30 people listened with great interest to Yehia and Haidy’s stories. On August 13, Summer in the Spirit presents “the Tobermory Camino,” a short pilgrimage through Tobermory with stories by some of its residents, including Barney Hopkins and Janaki Bandara. Participants should meet at the Bruce Trail cairn at 7:00 p.m., or at Tobermory United if it’s raining. On August 20, Summer in the Spirit partners with violinist Sarah Pratt-Parsamian and Music on the Bruce to present a classical music concert of works by Messaien and Mozart at 7:00 p.m. at Tobermory United Church. With the talent of the musicians and the acoustics of Tobermory United, this concert is not to be missed! A reception will follow. On August 27, Summer in the Spirit wraps up with a potluck feast at 6:00 p.m. at Tobermory United.

The Tobermory Thrift Shop is experiencing one of its most successful years ever. Our gratitude goes out to all in the community who faithfully drop off their household goods for re-sale and also to all those who come out to the Thrift Shop to purchase new treasures. The Thrift Shop is not only a fundraiser for Tobermory United, but also donates ten percent of all received to the Tobermory Community Outreach Fund for use in emergency need in the community. The Thrift Shop remains open in August Monday and Tuesday for donations, 1 to 4, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday for sales, also 1 to 4.

All are welcome to coffee chats, held every Friday morning at Tobermory United from 9:30 to noon, and to worship services, Sundays at 10:30. For more information about Tobermory United, check out our new web site at www.tobermoryunited.ca!
