Tobermory United is very pleased to announce that our community of faith received a Mission Support Grant for $10,000.00 from the Western Ontario Waterways Region of the United Church of Canada. Musicians tell us that they love playing in our sanctuary because of the beautiful acoustics and the welcoming natural wood and windows, so this grant is to enable us to enhance our capacity as a performance venue. We are so grateful for these funds, which will enable us to purchase and install some stage lighting, augment our sound equipment and build some removable risers. In April (date soon to be announced) we are hosting Jeff Bird (best known for his longtime association with the Cowboy Junkies) as he performs “Ordo Virtutum,” an interpretation of the haunting, meditative music of the twelfth-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen. Stay tuned for details!

Many, many thanks to the more than a hundred people who attended Tobermory United’s annual pancake supper on Feb. 17th. Having coordinated this event for more than fifteen years, Heather Munn and her team know exactly what they’re doing, so there was hot pancakes, farmers sausage, ham, baked beans, devilled eggs and a delectable assortment of desserts for all who attended. Everyone left well fed, but what was best was seeing friends and neighbours socializing, laughing and chatting. It’s been a long winter, and a lot of people were eager to get out.

On March 6, Tobermory United will take part in the World Day of Prayer service at 2:00 p.m. at Lion’s Head United Church. The World Day of Prayer is a global event that has been occurring for almost a hundred years. With participation in 150 countries around the world, this service sheds light each year on the lives of women and children in a specific nation, highlighting that country’s culture and justice issues. This year, the writing team is from Nigeria. All are welcome to this service, which will include a time for conversation and fellowship following.
