TUC Annual Pride Service June 29th

On June 8, Tobermory United celebrated the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. Part of that celebration was the reception of the next set of altar decorations created by Jo Lane for our sanctuary. This set, for ‘ordinary time,’ the season that stretches through the summer, depicts the summertime view as seen from the shore of Flowerpot Island. Once again, Jo has outdone herself in her artistry. The scene depicts the two flowerpots, the rugged shoreline, a yellow ladyslipper in the foreground and Bear’s Rump island in the distance. The creation of these works of art are made possible by a bequest left by Jan MacDonald, and we are so grateful to be able to honour Jan in this way.

On June 29, Tobermory United will celebrate its annual Pride service. Our theme for this service is “Why Pride Matters,” and several folks will share their thoughts on this. We look forward to Gwen Chapman and M.E. Kish offering their musical gifts!

The Tobermory Thrift Shop at 7101 Highway 6, a fundraising and community initiative of Tobermory United, is in full swing! Donations may be received Mondays and Tuesdays 1 to 4pm, and the shop is open for sales Thursday, Friday and Saturday, also 1 to 4pm. The Thrift Shop is short a few volunteers. This is fun and rewarding work, so if you’re looking to be part of this community endeavour, contact the church at tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca, or call 519-596-2394.

After the rousing success of the Spring Chicken BBQ, save the date for the summer edition! The Summer Chicken BBQ will occur August 2, and tickets will be available in Tobermory and Lion’s Head soon.

As well, Summer in the Spirit, a series of weekly events created to build community, honour the sacredness of place and celebrate Spirit is set to go for 2025! This series is a partnership between St. Edmund’s Anglican and Tobermory United. The series will begin July 2 with a day-long sacred fire hosted by Johnny Keeshig and April Jones of Nawash Three Fires, Neyaashiinigmiing. All are welcome to drop by the outdoor area at St. Edmund’s Anglican (38 Big Tub Road) between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. for storytelling, teachings and shared food. More information in the ad located in this issue! Mark your calendars for the other events this summer!
