This Sunday, we celebrate Pride Sunday and also Canada Day. Though not technically an Affirming congregation, Tobermory United takes seriously the celebration of and upholding of justice for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Pride Sunday, held at TUC on the last Sunday of June each year, is a joyous reflection of that.
We are so blessed this Sunday to welcome the musical gifts of M.E. Kish and Gwen Chapman. If you look at the United Church of Canada’s worship resource page for Pride Sunday (https://united-church.ca/worship-special-days/pride-sunday), you will find many of M.E.’s songs recommended, so how blessed are we to have M.E. and Gwen sharing their music in person!
The theme that the worship committee has chosen for Pride Sunday is “Why Pride Matters.” Several people, including M.E. and Gwen, will speak to that. As a cis-gender, heterosexual woman of faith, here are my own responses to “Why Pride Matters:”
Because our scriptures tell us that each of us are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139), and that includes everyone.
Because for a long time, 2SLGBTQ+ people needed to closet their authentic selves to be safe. It’s important now to create safe space so that those authentic selves can be welcomed and celebrated. Jesus did that a lot.
Because the rainbow has come to be seen as a symbol of beauty in diversity. More rainbows! More joy! More beauty!
Because love is love. Praise be to God.
To prepare, read Psalm 139 and ponder the following:
Do you believe that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?
What is your own response to “Why Pride Matters”?
